FWIW, the standard way to do this would be to make your IPFS API into a R package - possibly depending on other database-querying packages in Bioconductor (e.g., GEOquery, ArrayExpress, various TCGA-related packages) - for people to download and use. If need be, there's also a bunch of pure API packages (e.g., Rhtslib, Rhdf5lib) that are intended purely for use by other package developers.
