About the role

We are seeking a highly motivated postdoctoral scientist to work on an exciting HRC-funded fulltime, fixed-term position (three years), researching the population genomics and evolution of the bacterial pathogen, Neisseria meningitidis (the meningococcus) (http://www.hrc.govt.nz/funding-opportunities/recipients/dr-philip-carter). The project shall analyse whole genome sequencing data from clinical isolates to investigate the evolution, diversity, and adaptation of the meningococci responsible for the New Zealand epidemic. The candidate will be based within a multidisciplinary team in the Health group of ESR, Wellington, New Zealand. The project is in collaboration with Professor Martin Maiden (University of Oxford, United Kingdom) and his group.  The candidate will also have access to an extensive culture collection and high quality epidemiological data, with opportunities to develop their own research interests.

Skills and Experience

The successful candidate will have a PhD and a strong background in evolutionary microbiology, microbial phylogenetics, microbial population genetics or a related field. Experience in bioinformatic analysis of whole genome sequence data in a Linux environment is essential. Experience with GWAS analysis and/or Bayesian phylogenetic methods are preferred, but not essential.

About ESR
