  • World-class health and medical research facility in Adelaide, South Australia
  • Very competitive remuneration package including access to excellent salary packaging, relocation support where necessary and other benefits
  • Full time, 2 year initial contract with potential for renewal

Purpose of the Position
The Lynn EMBL Australia Group at the South Australian Health and Medical Research Institute (SAHMRI) is now seeking applications for a Senior Postdoctoral Fellow in Computational Biology/Bioinformatics with a demonstrated track record in the field evidenced by significant publications in international peer-reviewed journals.
The ideal candidate will have demonstrated experience in network/systems biology. Experience in at least some of the following areas would also be an asset: Using statistical approaches such as machine learning to relate high-throughput genomics data to clinical phenotypes; experience in the analysis of high-throughput MS proteomics, next generation sequencing (e.g. RNAseq/ChIPSeq) or metagenomics data.

The successful candidate will work as part of a team that includes both computational biologists and wet-lab scientists investigating the immune system and cancer from a systems biology perspective – knowledge of immunology/cancer biology would therefore be an advantage.

SAHMRI: is a new $250 million state-of-the-art medical research facility with excellent core facilities and services, including a high-performance computing cluster. SAHMRI is located in the new $3 billion biomedical precinct in the Adelaide central business district, close to all the amenities of the city. Adelaide boasts a Mediterranean climate, beautiful beaches and is within an hour’s drive of world-class wine regions including the Barossa Valley.

EMBL Australia: The European Molecular Biology Laboratory – is Europe's flagship for the life sciences. The Australian government joined EMBL as an Associate Member in 2008. EMBL Australia was subsequently created to maximise the benefits of Australia’s associate membership of EMBL and does so via research projects, infrastructure and training programs across Australia. The Lynn Group is one of 20 research teams that are being established at institutes around Australia under the EMBL model.

Key Responsibilities

  • Play a leading role in the PRIMES project, a €12 million European Commission funded project that is investigating how certain cancer-relevant networks are rewired in the presence of oncogenic mutations and how to target them.
  • Implement and develop efficient pipelines for the analysis of a wide range genome-wide data and where necessary develop new custom bioinformatics methods and/or pipelines for projects in the group/theme.
  • Implement machine learning based approaches to identify novel associations between genome-wide data, host immune responses and disease.
  • Provide collaborative support to others in the group/theme with bioinformatics components of their projects.
  • Lead the writing of publications relating to the projects.

Qualifications

  • PhD in computational biology, bioinformatics, computer science, physics, statistics or other relevant discipline
  • Significant postdoctoral experience in computational biology/bioinformatics

Essential Experience, Knowledge and Skills

  • Advanced programming skills in several of the following: Java, Python, C++, Perl, R.
  • Prior experience working in a high performance computing environment.
  • Demonstrated experience in network/systems biology and particularly in the analysis, interpretation and visualisation of protein-protein interaction networks.
  • Must be highly collaborative, be a strong team player and be able to manage multiple ongoing projects.
  • Track record of publications in bioinformatics/computational biology.
