The Institute for Molecular Medicine Finland (FIMM), part of the University of Helsinki and the Nordic EMBL Partnership for Molecular Medicine, is an international research institute in Helsinki focusing on human genomics and personalized medicine. FIMM integrates molecular medicine research, technology center and biobanking infrastructures "under one roof" and thereby promotes translational research and adoption of personalized medicine in health care.
FIMM is currently seeking outstanding candidates for the positions of
one PhD student and one Postdoctoral researcher
with interest in bioinformatics and biostatistics and their application to molecular medicine and translational research. We are interested in applicants with a background in any quantitative subject, such as bioinformatics, computational biology, computer science, physics, statistics, engineering or the like.
Description: The positions will be in the new research group of Dr. Simon Anders. The group's research will focus on developing statistical methods and bioinformatics tools to analyse and integrate heterogeneous high-dimensional data as found in multi-omics biomedical research projects, especially in cancer studies. In close collaboration with biologists and clinicians, we will adapt approaches from multi-dimensional statistics and design interactive exploratory data analysis tools to give clinical researchers the tools they need to work with big data and derive treatment strategies for individual patients. For further details, please see the group web page or contact Dr. Anders (simon.anders@helsinki.fi).
Qualifications: The ideal candidate has knowledge and experience in at least some of the following areas: statistics, data analysis, machine learning and/or software development. She or he has a strong interest and willingness to learn about both statistical and bio-medical topics, is fluent in written and spoken English and able to communicate efficiently in an interdisciplinary team. For the PhD student’s position, a qualifying secondary degree, for the post-doctoral position, a PhD degree in a relevant subject is required.
We offer a productive, interdisciplinary and extremely collaborative work environment, excellent technical facilities, strong ties to clinical research, and internationally competitive salaries and benefits, both for PhD students and post-docs. PhD students typically join the University of Helsinki Doctoral School in Health Sciences and doctoral programs to provide excellent research training and courses aimed at a doctoral degree at the University of Helsinki. Post-docs benefit from the FIMMPOD Postdoctoral and Senior Researcher Program for career development.
To apply, please send a cover letter (1‒3 pages) and CV (1‒2 pages), both in English, as a single PDF file to fimm-email@helsinki.fi with the subject "Application (Anders group)" no later than 31 August 2015. Please describe your research interests, previous research experience and your relevant skills and also include contact information for 2‒3 references. For informal inquiries, please contact Dr. Anders. The anticipated starting date is in autumn 2015.
