The R builds for Leopard are right there on the page that people pointed to you, that is: http://r.research.att.com/ There are 4 different build flavors here: 2 for Tiger (for the i386 and ppc archs only) and 2 for Leopard (these are _full_ universal builds aka "quad builds" i.e. they were compiled for the 4 archs: i386, ppc, x86_64 and ppc64). Now install either R-2.6-branch-leopard-universal.tar.gz or R-devel-leopard-universal.tar.gz depending on which version of BioC you want to use: the former is for BioC 2.1 (the current release) and the latter for BioC 2.2 (the current devel). Then start R with --arch=x86_64 or --arch=ppc64 and you will be running in 64-bit mode. Cool, thank you So I bagged 2.3.1 and Got up a big drive and Put up Leopard and Installed R-2.6-branch-leopard-universal.tar.gz and R --arch=ppc64 in the terminal now seems to work tho I have not done ReadAffy on 81 cels yet and affyQCReport How does one make R.app do R --arch=ppc64? Was pointed out that subject line is not helpful Maybe was not helpful but was surely a true statement Started out to "merely" ReadAffy and QCRepot 81 .cel files Then fell apart with "cannot allocate vector..." Then tried RAM but the problem was 32 bit Then tried the old 2.3.1 64bit monster package but it was missing stuff Then bought big hard drives Then installed Leopard (easy) Then installed 64bit R (medium easy) Then set up tools to install 64bit Bio (not easy) Then installed 64bit Bio packages And what is the outcome then? I can now ReadAffy and QCReport 81 .cel files in 64bit R/Bio can you believe it? at the end of the process it was using 5gb real and 9gb virtual RAM Thank you to all who helped I will now actually study the QCReport since that was the whole point of this exercise What have I learned? The combined knowledge of the R group is considerable Emails range from brilliant to incorrect with a touch of "boorish" tossed in 64bit R/Bio is not easy As for the long discussion of documentation elsewhere I am no expert on R/Bio documentation but If there is a goal of bringing in newbies There could be a web page titled "Newbies Start Here" Many help documents could benefit from more examples written for/by a newbie Many help documents might be read by a newbie and translated into newbie.R.English Now off to read the QCReport and Christmas Thanks again for your help completing this, was actually fun, ah well sort of -- Loren Engrav Univ Washington Seattle

That monster package was a one-off experimental build that Simon did 2 years ago. One-off = it is not being repeated.
