STATISTICAL GENETICIST

Denali Therapeutics, South San Francisco

Denali Therapeutics is dedicated to developing innovative therapies for neurodegenerative diseases through our deep commitment to degeneration biology and principles of translational medicine.

Recent breakthroughs in identifying the genetic causes underlying neurodegenerative diseases offer an opportunity for the discovery and development of effective treatments for Alzheimer’s disease, Parkinson’s disease, Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS) and other neurodegenerative diseases.

To translate these genetic insights into actionable drug targets, biomarkers and novel therapeutics, we are seeking a Statistical Geneticist/Genetic Epidemiologist to join Denali at our headquarters in South San Francisco, California.

The candidate will drive Denali's internal efforts to identify and prioritize novel therapeutic targets and biomarkers of disease heterogeneity, disease progression and therapeutic outcome using human genetics.

The Opportunity

You will contribute to defeating neurodegeneration by

  • Investigating the genetic causes of Alzheimer's Disease, Parkinson's Disease, ALS and other major neurodegenerative disorders.
  • Applying or developing statistically sound approaches to analyze genetic association or linkage data, e.g using regression models including linear mixed models, burden tests and LD score regression.
  • Prioritizing drug targets and predicting potential safety signals based on associations with traits in public datasets (e.g UK Biobank).
  • Using methods like Mendelian Randomization to identify causative genetic factors.
  • Exploring pharmacogenomic approaches within Denali's clinical programs
  • Collaborating with Scientists from diverse fields, e.g. molecular biology, chemistry,  pharmacology and clinical sciences.
  • Communicating your findings to specialists and non-specialists and the academic research community through presentations and publications.
  • Contributing to Denali's overall human genetics strategy and goals assessing public-private partnerships.

Requirements

  • Driven by the desire to make a positive impact on human health through rigorous collaborative science.
  • PhD in a relevant field, e.g. Human Genetics, Epidemiology, Statistics, Computational Biology or similar.
  • Proven track record of analyzing genetic association data, e.g. linkage studies, GWAS, PheWAS or eQTL studies.
  • Solid foundation in statistical genetics and understand the methods implemented in commonly used tools, e.g. PLINK and GATK.
  • Extensive experience with R, Python or other languages commonly used for genetic data analysis. Experience with AWS is a plus.
  • Enjoy learning and sharing your expertise in a collaborative working environment.
